Rattlesnake Master Seed (Eryngium yuccifolium)
Rattlesnake Master is a warm-season perennial native forb and a true tallgrass prairie species. It grows 3 to 5 feet tall, producing unique, spiky white flower heads with a sweet aroma that attract a wide variety of pollinators. Naturally found in rocky woods, moist to slightly dry prairies, savannas, and limestone glades, it thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy to loamy soils with dry to moderate moisture. Once established, it develops a large taproot and should be left undisturbed. Historically, Native Americans used its fibers for cordage and its roots for medicinal purposes. It’s well suited for prairie restorations, roadside plantings, and ornamental wildflower gardens. Seed should be planted about ¼ inch deep in a firm, weed-free seedbed. Controlled burning may help maintain vigor and limit invasive species.
