New England Aster Seed (Aster novae-angliae)
New England Aster is one of the showiest native asters, lighting up roadsides, meadows, and stream edges with vivid purple, violet, or pink blooms from late summer into fall. Native to the central and eastern United States and parts of Canada, it thrives in moderate to moist soils such as prairie swales, wet meadows, thickets, and low fields. This hardy perennial grows 2 to 6 feet tall and provides an important late-season nectar source for honey bees, native bees, and butterflies. It’s also well suited for rain gardens and bioswales. Prepare a clean, firm, weed-free seedbed by disking, harrowing, or using chemical weed control, and plant seed 1/8 to 1/4 inch deep. Plants may drop their lower leaves in hot, dry weather.
