Maximilian Sunflower Seed (Helianthus maximiliani)
Maximilian Sunflower is a tall, hardy perennial native to the Great Plains and much of central North America. Reaching heights of 5 to 8 feet, it produces showy yellow blooms up to 3 inches wide from late summer into fall. It grows well in full sun with dry to moderate moisture and adapts to a wide variety of soils. This species is valuable for prairie restorations, habitat development, and conservation plantings, providing both beauty and ecological benefit. The flowers attract butterflies, beetles, and long- and short-tongued bees, while birds feed on its seeds and deer browse the foliage. Seeds should be planted from November to May in the central Great Plains or January to March farther south, raked lightly into loose soil and covered with ¼–½ inch of soil or mulch.
