Cup Plant - (Silphium Perfoliatum)
Cup Plant is a tall, branching perennial native to the tallgrass prairie regions of the United States and Canada. Its name comes from the “cups” formed where pairs of opposite leaves join around the stem, often holding rainwater that attracts birds and insects. Plants can reach heights of 4–8 feet and produce clusters of bright yellow, sunflower-like blooms through mid to late summer. Deep, extensive roots make this species exceptionally hardy but difficult to transplant once established. It performs best in full sun and medium to moist soils and is a strong choice for pollinator gardens, naturalized landscapes, and prairie restorations. The flowers draw butterflies, honey bees, and native bees. Cup Plant has even earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit for its reliability and visual impact.
